該片根據愛爾蘭共產黨領袖詹姆斯·格拉爾頓生平創作，講述他1933年從美國流亡歸來，重啟“吉米舞廳”的故事。所謂“吉米舞廳”是指詹姆斯·格拉爾頓在愛爾蘭Effrinagh開辦的一家舞廳，無數自由的思想家在這里學習、激辯、夢想和娛樂。不過《吉米的舞廳》很有可能是洛奇拍攝的最后一部故事片了，早在今年8月洛奇長期合作伙伴、電影制片人RebeccaO’Brien就曾向媒體透過口風，說由于年紀和精力的原因，肯·洛奇今后只會拍紀錄片和電視劇，不大可能再拍故事片了
